Introduction to Malaysia

There are two distinct land masses in Malaysia. The Malay Peninsular is known locally as West Malaysia whilst the states of Sabah and Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo are known as East Malaysia.

The cave regions of West Malaysia are already covered in the excellent Caves and Limestone Hills of Malaysia website by Liz Price.

There are several distinct cave regions in East Malaysia, the most well known being Gunung Mulu National Park. Other well known regions include Bau near to Kuching, the Niah Caves between Bintulu and Miri and Gomontong in Sabah.

There are several other regions which so far have only been looked at briefly and deserve more attention. Unfortunately Mulu contains probably the best caves in the world and each expedition discovers more than twenty kilometres of new cave. This has meant that the other regions attract little interest in the international caving world.
